MEDICAL

Based in Vail, the Vail Valley Medical Center (180 S. Frontage Rd. West, 970/476-2451, www.vvmc.com) serves the entire valley. Urgent care facilities include Colorado Mountain Clinic (970/926-6340, www.cmmhealth.com, 8am-5pm Mon.-Fri., 8am-2pm Sat.), which has three valley locations, including Vail (108 S. Frontage Rd. West #101), Edwards (322 Beard Creek Rd. #200), and Eagle (377 Sylvan Lake Rd. #210).

The Vail Valley

A few miles west of Vail, I-70 meets the Eagle River, a popular and beautiful fly-fishing stream that flows through a region commonly called the Vail Valley. Stretching about 40 miles from Vail to tiny Dotsero, where the Eagle joins the mighty Colorado River, this region has its own distinct character. Encircled by the 2.3-million-acre White River National Forest, the area feels more isolated, with smaller and more rural towns and an environment that blends the best of the central Rockies with a taste of western Colorado’s drier, slickrock setting.

In addition to Vail Mountain, the area includes the affluent Beaver Creek ski area and the satellite towns of Arrowhead, Avon, and Edwards, as well as Red Cliff, Eagle County’s oldest town, and Minturn, a former railroad crossroads that today hosts a thriving arts community and one of the state’s most vibrant farmers markets.
